ST. CROIX — Senate President Milton Potter is in the process of selecting senators to serve on a Committee on Ethical Conduct to review a complaint his office has received against At-Large Senator Angel Bolques Jr., according to the Senate president.

Potter did not provide any details about the nature of the complaint at this time.

“It’s just a complaint and it would be unfair for me to take this matter any further as far as giving any details about that until we properly vet the complaint utilizing the rules of the 36th Legislature, which governs how the process is to be handled once someone makes the complaint,” he said.

Potter said he is in the process of empaneling a Committee on Ethical Conduct to evaluate the legitimacy of the complaint. After the committee has properly vetted the complaint, Potter said he would be in a better position to publicly discuss the matter.

“It’s just important to really get out there that just a mere complaint, a mere accusation in and of itself does not constitute wrongdoing,” he said. “The process has to be fair. I just caution anyone from making the assumption that a mere accusation means the senator has done anything in and of itself unethical or improper.”

Bolques was unable to be reached and did not respond to a request for comment as of publication time.
